A Study on the Process of System Transition in Georgia

조지아의 체제전환 과정 연구

초록

After being annexed by Tsarist Russia in the early 1800s, Georgia remained under Russian rule until independence in 1901. It was also forcibly annexed by the Soviet government in 1921 and considered a federal state before independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. After independence, reforms were made to transform the country from an autocracy to a democracy, culminating with the Rose Revolution in November 2003, when President Shevardnadze was overthrown and ending the dictatorship. After that, President Saakashvili sought economic stability away from corruption and actively promoted the EU and NATO membership, freeing Georgia from Russian influence. However, the ethnic conflict and territorial disputes with Abkhazia and South Ossetia that existed before the Revolution still continue today. With this as an opportunity, political and social unrest has not stopped due to Russia's continued intervention. Georgia has geopolitical, geoeconomic, and strategic values, making it a battleground for supremacy among neighboring powers. Nevertheless, it is a country that is slowly moving towards full democracy.
