초록

Schleiermacher’s Über die Religion: Reden an die Gebildeten unter ihren Verächtern marked a significant turning point in the field of theology and religious studies which led to the academic transition of the modern era. The purpose of this paper is to examine why Schleiermacher’s concept of ‘religion’ has been influential in various aspects of modern theology and how it still has an important meaning. At first, I want to illuminate the historical background and ideological conditions of Schleiermacher’s thought and reconstruct its meaning. Since Schleiermacher’s work has already been well studied, this study will examine some of the key events that reveal the ideological conditions of the time. Secondly, based on the understanding of Schleiermacher’s thought, I try to focus on what he had in mind when discussing the concept of religion in Über die Religion. By illuminating the religion he describes, I finally attempt to elucidate the reasons why he had been actively accepted by the modern theologians and how the reappraisal of Schleiermacher’s understanding of religion contributed to the development of modern theology and religious studies.
