In this paper, we investigate efficient spectrum sharing methods to support device-to-device (D2D) communications in cellular networks. In particular, we develop mode selection and resource allocation algorithms. The mode selection criterion ensures that the performance degradation of the cellular link is limited, when a D2D link shares radio resource with the cellular link. The D2D links that may generate excessive interference to cellular links are forced to switch to the cellular mode, even though devices are in close proximity. Meanwhile, the proposed resource allocation algorithm is designed to make each D2D link share radio resource with a cellular link, so that the impact of interference from the cellular link to the D2D link is minimized. Furthermore, in developing algorithms, we consider the case of full channel state information as well as that of partial channel state information at the base station. The performance of the proposed mode selection and resource allocation algorithms is verified through computer simulation. © 2014 International Information Institute.
