Determinism, Moral Theory, and the Mind-Body Relation in Spinoza

Spinoza’s mind-body theory has been controversial with a variety of diverse interpretations, whereas it is accepted by most commentators that a consensus exists in interpreting Spinoza's metaphysics as determinism. In this paper, I examine several major interpretations of Spinoza’s mind– body theory in light of his metaphysical determinism. I argue that Spinoza’s metaphysical determinism undermines both the hylomorphic and the epiphenomenalist interpretations, while providing support for the double-aspect theory. In addition to this, I have drawn out Spinoza’s points of view on moral theory, because Spinoza’s ethical thought also provides further philosophical support for the plausibility of the double- aspect theory. Thus, the double-aspect interpretation is further supported by other dimensions of Spinoza's philosophy, especially his metaphysical determinism and his moral theory. This way of understanding can help solve the difficulties behind Spinoza’s idea and reveal the true meaning behind his thoughts, and thus can give the most fundamental perspective on Spinoza’s system.
