초록

The final canto of Book I of The Faerie Queene foreshadows Guyon's voyage towards temperance in Book II. Guyon's quest begins with the family at the Nymph's Fountain and ends with his sea voyage to the Bower of Bliss. In Book II this voyage-motif is significant not only on a metaphorical level, but also on a narrative level, mainly because Guyon actually undertakes a voyage by water. In Book II the water imagery is pervasive. Of these, one is given canto-length treatment―the Idle Lake―and the other occupies half of the longest canto in the first two books--the sea voyage to the Bower of Bliss. Water is used almost exclusively as an image of evil in Book II. This water imagery is woven both structurally and symbolically into the poem.
