A Study on the Efficiency of Global Major Mobile Operators

This study analyzed the efficiency of global major mobile operators and the reason for their efficiency. For this purpose, the financial data of 96 operators in 40 OECD member countries were utilized. Based on this financial data, this study conducted a comparative analysis of the efficiency among operators and among countries. As for the analysis method, productivity was estimated, using the Malmquist Index. Operation efficiency and technology efficiency were estimated to analyze what elements acted on the productivity. The analysis results revealed that the productivity of mobile operators was led by technology efficiency. In verification among the countries, there was also cause for productivity enhancement; this was due to the process of conversion from 3G to 4G or M&A, but effective competition should be formed to increase productivity. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
