C. S. Lewis: A Case of the Mythologized Fact and Mythical Allegory

초록

The paper examines the dynamic between the religious belief and its literary formulation in C. S. Lewis, an eloquent Christian apologist and renowned literary writer. The burden of this paper is to examine both the way Lewis’s Christian belief influences his literary creation and the way his literary imagination affects his perception of religious truth. The paper first traces how the mythological imagination and Christian truth converge in Lewis’s life (I), and then examines his view of myths as prefiguration of the gospel and his view of the gospel as a “a myth which has become a fact” (III, IV). The paper then examines his understanding of fantasy and myth as a medium of communicating the gospel (V), before concluding with a brief discussion of two of his literary works, Magician’s Nephew and Till We Have Faces, to illustrate the foregoing discussions.
