초록
Neighborhood characteristics have been emphasized in explaining fear of crime. This study examines the impact of both neighborhood disorder and collective efficacy on fear of crime. In addition to their independent effects, this study explores the relationships among neighborhood disorder, collective efficacy, and fear of crime. This study suggests three models: first, neighborhood disorder has an influence on collective efficacy, which causes fear of crime; second, collective efficacy has an influence on neighborhood disorder, which causes fear of crime; and third, collective efficacy and neighborhood disorder have an interaction effect on fear of crime. Using panel data from Korean Youth Panel Survey, this study tests three structural equation models. Results supports a second causal model. That is, it is found that collective efficacy has an influence on neighborhood disorder and then, neighborhood disorder has a significant effect on fear of crime. However, results do not support the first causal and the third interaction model. Results reveal that neighborhood disorder has no significant effect on collective efficacy and that collective efficacy has not a direct effect on fear of crime. In addition, collective efficacy and neighborhood disorder have no interaction effect on fear of crime.
