라쇼몬(羅生門): 고전 설화에서 영화로의 궤적
초록
The critics of Rashomon of 1950 were very harsh. The critics of this picture who wrote in the Yomiuri Shinbum affected the future of the Japanese movie market. Three critics who wrote in the Yomiuri claimed that the movie was too serious, not interesting, hard to understand and the acting unnatural. Other critics mentioned that it was hard to catch the main themes of the movie. Surprisingly, these other critics said that the main topic of the movie was the mistrust of humankind. Also, most audiences did not understand the main topics of the movie. In the early stages of the making of the movie the assistant director quit the job because he, also, did not understand the main topics of the movie. The original novel of “Rashomon”, on which the movie was based, tried to accept the unreasonable nature of humankind’s personality. Previous criticisms and writers’ responses were derived from the context of the original novel. As a result, Kurosawa simplified the topic of “Yabunonaka” in a similar way to that done to the major topic of egoism in Rashomon. Also, Kurosawa emphasized humanism through his making of the image of monks, as well as through scenes using infant clothing in his movie. He tried to make the ending of the movie similar to that of a conventional soap opera, and he also appealed to audiences that found the major themes of the movie Rashomon difficult to understand.
