Remarks on A and A'-Movement in Double Object Constructions of British English Dialects

초록

This paper is a remark on Park (2012), which described British Englishas behaving differently from American English regardingA/A'-movement in double object constructions in that it shows perfectlysymmetric patterns. Park's (2012) Generalization is an attempt to capturethe alleged different patterns between American and British English, byconnecting Case absorption approach to passivization (withinherent/structural Case distinction) and the availability of (a)symmetricwh-movement patterns. In this paper, I will discuss three NorthwestBritish English dialects, and show that Park's (2012) presentation ofBritish English data is inadequate. I will also show that hisgeneralization cannot handle the observed dialectal variation in BritishEnglish, and propose an alternative analysis based on Lohndal's (2011)approach to freezing and Georgala's (2012) applicative hypothesis.
