Exploring the Experiences of Participating in Day Care Service by Middle-aged People with Developmental Disabilities

초록

This study explores the essential experiences of using day care services for middled aged people with developmental disabilities using Giorgi's phenomenological research method. Individual interviews were conducted with 15 users of day care services. The Experience of Life before using services had been disconnected from social welfare services, experienced early retirement, a boring daily life, and loss of support due to their parents' aging. The Experience while using day care services was positive daily changes, but faced the fatigue from activities, and economic burden of service fees. The Meaning of use of day care services went beyond simple space for the service and was a place of learning, vitality of life, shelter of life and another house. Based on these results, the implications were as follows: first, day care services must expand to provide for middle aged people with developmental disabilities. Second, the service fee should be alleviated because the service fee was the barrier to use. Third, middle-aged people with developmental disabilities were experiencing positive changes through day care services, but there are limitations in identifying whether specialized services are provided considering the physical and psychological characteristics of middle-aged people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop diverse programs according to the age in the future.
