현대영어 약어에 대한 한국과 미국 대학생의 관심도 및 이해도 연구

A Study on the College Students' Understanding of Abbreviated Words in Present Day English.

초록

One of the special features of the Present Day English (PDE) vocabulary is the increasing number of abbreviated words including acronyms and initialism (or alphabetism). This paper first examines characteristics of abbreviated forms and then comparatively analyzes the interest and understanding of abbreviated forms between Korean college students and American college students. By conducting the same survey on abbreviated words to 232 non-native speakers, Korean college students, and 32 native speakers, American college students, this paper tries to find out how well students understand the right meaning of abbreviated forms in PDE and why they use the abbreviated forms in their everyday lives. According to the results of the survey, Korean students have higher interest in using abbreviated forms but less degree of understanding their meanings. All American students answer that they use abbreviated forms because it is more convent, whereas some Korean students use them because they do not know their original forms.
