The public theology is based upon the criticism of the privatization of theology and aims for active participation in public discourses for the common good of society. This essay summarizes the starting point as well as the goal of public theology with the concept of deprivatization thesis. While the deprivatization thesis aims to overcome secularization and individualization, which are included under the concept of privatization, their public contributions will be clarified in this paper. By focusing on Harnack's privatized theological conception of the Gospel and his participation in political and social questions, it will be argued that the public dimension of theology can be regained not in exclusion of secularization and individualization, but in positive reception of them.
