자살생각에 있어 사회적 자본의 효과에 대한 연구
초록
The suicide rate in Korea is the highest among the OECD countries, and the suicide of the elderly and adolescents, in particular, is considered a serious social problem. In this regard, existing studies have revealed socio-demographic characteristics related to suicidal thoughts. Among them, the effect of social connection has been studied within the conceptual framework of social capital. Many studies have reported that social capital, such as personal networks and participation in social activities, plays a role in suppressing suicidal thoughts. This paper aims to investigate the effect of social capital on individuals' suicidal thoughts using the Korea Institute of Public Administration's Korea Social Integration Survey(2018-19). Considering that the effect of social capital can vary depending on life cycle and gender, we looked at groups of men and women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s separately. This study measured social capital with the following seven variables: the number of non-residential family members or relatives in contact on weekdays, the number of other people in contact on weekdays, general trust in others, whether participating in formal/informal organizations, the number of people whom respondent can receive financial and emotional help, and the length of residence where they live. Socio-economic factors that can influence suicidal thoughts such as gender, education, education level, employment status, marital status, household income, depression, subjective health status, and residential area were included as control variables. The results of the linear probability model analysis is that the effects of each item of social capital on suicidal thought vary by gender and age group. Interpretation of findings and policy implications are discussed.
