The Effect of Face on Self-disclosure in SNSSeungho Cho & Eunjung Shim Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between face and self-disclosure. Face has been studied in various aspects as a very important factor of individual behavior in Korean society. This study focuses on how face is related to self-disclosure for those in their 20s who are most active in social network services. Face was divided into other-oriented face, social formality, and self-consciousness face, and self-disclosure was measured by being divided into honesty, negative message, positive message, intention, frequency, and width. The research method was an empirical analysis, and an online survey was conducted for Facebook users in their 20s. As a result of the study, it was found that social formality had a significant influence on the honesty and positive message of self-disclosure, and that others’ appetite had a significant relationship with negative messages, intentions, frequency, and width.
