Icons are interaction media to deliver abstract concepts from computers to users when working with computers. Icons of abstract concepts in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) are easily delivering a variety of information, including alarms and warning signals, for blind as well as normal people to perceive information from their environments. However, current research for delivering abstract concepts in HCI is not sufficient for intuitively designing icons likewise emotional contents. Therefore, we focused on studying abstract concepts in HCI that would be delivered by icons and tried to distinguish abstract concepts from each other by creating a typology. For the investigation, 15 different types of abstract concepts in HCI were selected and 4 quadrants with 2 axes were generated. Participants in our experiments were presented 15 cards of distinguishable abstract concepts in HCI and were asked to match the cards on the quadrants. From the results of the experiments, we can conclude that there are empirical associations between x-y axes (x: activity, y: priority) and abstract concepts in HCI. This study will provide a typology for abstract concepts that can be delivered by haptic, visual and auditory icons. © 2015 ICIC International.
