Synergistic integration of multimode applications in Gd2WO6:RE (RE=Eu3+or Tb3+)

This work introduces a synergistic design, integrating a luminescent, paramagnetic, moisture-stable platform within single-phase rare-earth (RE; Eu3+ or Tb3+)-doped gadolinium tungstate (Gd2WO6) to achieve multifunctional luminescence suitable for diverse applications. Gd2WO6:RE3+ phosphors were prepared by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction. The prepared Gd2WO6:Eu3+ exhibited outstanding photoluminescence with an internal quantum yield of 72.2 %, measured using a calibrated integrating-sphere setup under an excitation wavelength of 393 nm. The intrinsic paramagnetism of Gd2WO6:RE enabled magnetic particle-based crack inspection, whereas its remarkable water stability allowed luminescence-based sensing of aqueous Fe3+ ions. Furthermore, it exhibited significant X-ray-excited luminescence, thereby demonstrating its potential as a scintillator. Integrating high-efficiency emissions, magnetic responsiveness, environmental robustness, and radiation detection in a single RE-doped Gd2WO6 system establishes it as a versatile platform for next-generation multimodal optical applications.
