Smart polymer nanocomposite adhesives with switchable adhesion capabilities provide precise control over the microfabrication of flexible devices and have great potential in a wide range of applications, such as highprecision assembly, micro-transfer printing, and soft robotic grasping. However, global adhesion control on colorless and transparent polymer adhesives remains challenging. Herein, we report an effective and scalable methodology for fabricating surface-adhesion-controllable colorless polymer nanocomposite adhesives with excellent optical transparency using sodium bicarbonate-bearing thermosensitive nanoparticles. An elegant design strategy for thermally triggered transparent nanocomposite adhesive films providing tunable adhesion between the target substrate and polymer film is proposed. The thermal actuation of the stimuli-responsive nanoparticle-based adhesives induced CO2 gas generation in the sodium bicarbonate core, resulting in interfacial openings at the adhesion interface and a repulsive force on the target substrate. Consequently, this proposed nanocomposite adhesive film exhibited easy and spontaneous detachment with an excellent debonding efficiency of approximately 97% compared with the conventional adhesive film. Furthermore, high optical clarity and colorless properties can be precisely achieved according to the dispersion and structure of thermosensitive nanoparticles. The proposed strategy for thermally actuated adhesion control may be broadly useful in various industrial fields, ranging from temporary bonding/debonding of semiconductors to on-demand detachment of optoelectronic devices.
