Dual-Polarized Phased-Array Antenna With Asymmetric Coupled-Line Network and a Matched Observation Combiner for Self-Calibration

In this letter, we propose a dual-polarized multibeam array with asymmetric coupled lines for antenna-connected self-calibration. The coupled lines are integrated along the edges of aperture-coupled slot-fed microstrip patch antennas with a matching network to equalize the coupling responses of asymmetrically fed V-polarization and H-polarization paths. A matched 4:1 radial resistive combiner further stabilizes the coupled-signal collection by mitigating combiner-induced amplitude/phase distortion and enhancing interport isolation. The proposed network achieves tightly matched coupling characteristics across both polarizations over the operating band. To validate the design, a 2 & times;2 dual-polarized module and a 2 & times;8 array with a stacked four-beam transmit front end were implemented at 3.4 GHz to 3.8 GHz. Multibeam measurements confirm that the self-calibrated beams closely agree with simulations without noticeable degradation of radiation characteristics, demonstrating reliable dual-polarized self-calibration under antenna-connected operation.
