Multifunctional thermal and mechanical enhancements in gypsum composites incorporating microcrystalline cellulose and microencapsulated PCM

Gypsum boards containing microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCM) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were studied to enhance multifunctional performance of building materials. The effects of MPCM content and MCC addition on the thermal and mechanical behaviors of gypsum composites were quantitatively assessed. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed stepwise mass losses due to gypsum dehydration and the decomposition of MCC and MPCM, with the highest MPCM content showing a reduction of 21.7%. Differential scanning calorimetry curves showed distinct endothermic peaks near 31 degrees C, with latent heat up to 13.73 J/g, confirming MPCM as the primary thermal-storage component. State-of-charge analysis indicated phase change within 29-33 degrees C, and MCC-containing specimens exhibited up to 18% delayed liquid-fraction decrease during cooling, suggesting modified heat-diffusion paths. Thermal conductivity was lower than plain gypsum, with MPCM-only composites having thermal conductivity reduced by up to 38%, whereas MCC-containing formulations remained stable at 0.12-0.13 W/m & sdot;K. In dynamic heat-transfer tests, internal surface temperatures increased with delay within the phase-change range, and cumulative energy uptake increased with MPCM content, reaching approximately 18-25% higher stored energy. Mechanical tests showed that MCC improved the compressive strength by 27.9-67.3% over MCC-free specimens at the same MPCM level. Overall, latent-heat storage was dominated by MPCM, whereas MCC contributed to heat-diffusion control and structural reinforcement, collectively enhancing thermal and mechanical performance. These multifunctional effects indicate the potential of MPCM-MCC-gypsum composites as advanced thermal-energy-storage building materials.
