A Study on the Present and Future of English-Related Departments in Korean Colleges

초록

Since the late 1990s, Korean universities and colleges have been trying to improve their educational systems to adapt to the world-wide trend of internationalization and globalization. As more than ten years went by, English-related departments in particular are now facing serious problems such as the burden of an increased number of students to educate as well as the low employment rate of their graduates. Hence, it raises the question of whether or not we, the faculty members of the English-related departments, are heading for the right direction. In this paper, the results of the survey, which was held in between May and July 2010 and participated by 138 professors in 49 schools and 651 students in 29 schools, are statistically analyzed and discussed in detail based on the comparison among participating schools as well as between professors and students. The survey topics include 1) the future of the English-related departments; 2) the English curriculum; 3) academic and career counseling programs; 4) potential improvements for the current educational system; 5) content-based English classes and intensive language program in and out of the country. Due to the large volume of information, this paper focuses on the present of English related departments. Further discussions for their future will soon appear in the next paper.
