Acoustic characteristics of Han-ok focusing on low frequency

Han-ok is well-known for its scientific as well as its natural charms to native Koreans and even tourists from all over the world. Han-ok is built using natural materials including wood, soil, stone and paper. Especially its wooden floors built atop stone blocks produce their unique acoustic characteristics which are reinforced with a space between the ground and the floor. This paper investigates the acoustic characteristics of Han-ok using low frequency impulse response and reports that the space between the ground and the wooden floors performs an important role as a resonance pipe or a 'sound box' spreading sound to every corner of the house and consequently producing very special sound effect especially for low frequency sound. © 2017 International Information Institute.
