Recently, the development of mobile computing technology has made mobile technology adopted for the work efficiency and the patient care services in hospitals. In this study, we examine the difference of legibility and satisfaction of users in multimodal mobile interfaces for electronic consent forms in healthcare system. We review gender differences as a result of this study. Ultimately, the effects of multimodal mobile interfaces are verified. We developed 3 types mobile interfaces of an actual MRI consent form using the Android-based Galaxy Tab 10.1, which are text-centric (Text+Image), soundcentric (Text+Image+Sound), and video-centric (Text+Sound+Video) types. 48 college students participated in the survey. They answered the questions about legibility (reading time, understanding) and satisfaction after they used the developed multimodal mobile interfaces. The result was different from the existing studies in which the multimodal interfaces gave higher preference and reliability to users. This study shows that the respondents preferred Text type, except to some items. However, the male mostly preferred text-centric type, and the female mostly preferred video-centric type in the gender differences. We will expect that the results can be used as a basic data for more effective design and implementation of multimodal mobile interfaces in the electronic consent form in healthcare institutes. © 2015 ICIC International.
