White and pink noises are known to reduce the time in falling into sleep. Among various acoustic characteristics of these two sounds, they are characteristically continuous and repetitive. When we enter the forest and listen to sounds in the nature, there are certain sounds with similar acoustic features to those of white and pink noises. In this paper, the characteristics of white and pink noises are compared to those of sounds heard in the forest, including bird chirping and water flowing sound. Positive functions of the forest sound as a sleep-inducer are confirmed in this paper when compared to white and pink nose, and thus the study proves that the sound heard in the forest can promote or induce sleep. © 2015 International Information Institute.
