A study on Changes in Taekkyeon during the Japanese Colonial Period and Independence Patriots

초록

This study looks at the relationship between fighters for overseas independence from Japan and Taekkyeon through literatures and in-depth interview that is a method to conduct qualitative study. Fist, it seem that Taekkyeon was suppressed as part of policy to obliterate Korean culture as Taekkyeon was used as means to conduct independence movement against Japan. Second, there were two totally different views to Taekkyeon among anti-Japanese independence activities and pro-Japanese traitors. Such discrepance seems to be associated at least partly with the background of the period during the Japanese colonial era. Third, fighters for independence from Japan, who are related to Taekkyeon, include Kim Gu, Seo Jae-pil, Park Chun-byeong, and Han Il-dong. Fourth, it is highly likely that fighters for independence who were from the Korean Empire Armed Forces adopted Taekkyeon as their military training. Fifth, it is assumed that it is highly likely that Taekkyeon was the subject of jujitsu in Korean emerging martial arts school. Sixth, it is known that Kim Kyeong-woon and Kim Young-ski, who were related to Taekkyeon participated in independence movement.
