초록

This study examines Fang Fang’s Soft Burial to reveal how amnesia and silence, within the overwhelming forces of state violence and the “politics of memory,” become both passive and powerful languages of resistance. At the same time, through the active pursuit of the son, Qinglin, his ethical amnesia and the writings of his friend, Long Zhongyong, demonstrate various ways in which “suppressed memories” are restored and “official memories” are challenged. Both forgetting and recording thus hold crucial significance in the process of remembering history. The work critiques the limitations of a single historical narrative and calls for a complex, multilayered reflection on how history is remembered and forgotten. It further reveals that the “politics of memory” encompasses not only repression and resistance but also ethical and ontological questions. In the work, Ding Zitao’s amnesia and the “funeral of the flowers” function as a tragic response to the “politically enforced oblivion,” and their very “absence” paradoxically renders visible the magnitude of state violence. Wu Zaming’s silence transcends mere “speechlessness,” becoming a multilayered language that paradoxically expresses the fear and oppression of the time, while exposing the transgenerational transmission of trauma. In contrast, Qinglin’s forgetting and Long Zhongyong’s record portray the ethical dilemma inherent in engaging with history and invite reflection on the multiplicity of memory.
