Investigation of association between vibrotactile stimuli and emotion

Haptic icons are the icons based on vibrotactile stimuli. It is useful for blind as well as normal people to perceive information from their environment. Users can intuitively perceive information, such as emotional content. As the key point of study, we focused on haptic icons as a medium of conveying emotions and tried to determine whether haptic icons can deliver a specific emotion. Thus, we conducted experiments that ask participants about their associations between emotion and perceived vibrotactile stimuli. Participants in our experiments perceived 36 distinguishable stimuli and described their associated emotions. As a result of the experiments, we can conclude that there are typical associations between emotion and perceived vibrotactile stimuli. This study will provide the guidelines for designing more useful haptic icons in terms of variety and intuitiveness. © 2014 ISSN 2185-2766.
