한송이 포도(一房の葡萄론 ― 선생님의 조형과 포도의 상징성을 중심으로 ―

초록

There have been many previous studies about Takeo’s fairy tale “The Grape of One Branch". Although there are some differences between these studies, the major topic of most of these is related to “teacher’s love" and Christianity. This paper attempts to explore the image of an ideal teacher, and the meaning of “the grape". My argument and related findings are given below.The hero for Takeo was artistically oriented but weak, and thus he tried to express himself through his paintings, which he did in a class dominated by European students. One day he steals one of his class- mate’s paints, but is caught by the other classmates. He does not regret the stealing, but is more concerned about his reputation after the incident. The hero’s regret comes through his realization that he has annoyed his favorite teacher. The fairy tale’s major subject is the ideal image of a teacher, realized through the hero’s stealing. The context of the ideal image of the teacher contains two points. First, the teacher forgives the hero and thus allows him to retain his dignity. Second, the teacher’s love is shown through others, and through reconciliation. The acts of the teacher’s love were that he used the grape of one and the same branch, and that he gave it to himself and Jim, and the sharing was heightened by the fact that two halves were given from the same grape. First the giving of the grape symbolized the teacher’s reconciliation and forgiveness regarding the hero’s stealing. Second, the grape symbolized the recon- ciliation between himself and Jim, as well as providing a sensitive and visual perspective of an act of a teacher’s love. Finally, one should be concerned about the fictional aspects related to the scene of forgiveness in “The Grape of One Branch". Also, the writer idolizes the teacher’s love by revealing his sexual desire. These two points indicate the major focus of the ideal image of the teacher in this fairy tale.
