초록

Despite the potential relationship between marketization and corruption, most relevant studies have provided anecdotal rather than empirical evidence on this connection, particularly in authoritarian regimes. This study aims to empirically examine the impact of quasi-marketization on the prevalence of corruption in North Korea. Additionally, we investigate how the extent of corruption differs across society and the bureaucrats within the authoritarian regime. We found that in an authoritarian regime like North Korea, quasi-marketization is related to both society and the market corruption. However, we have a different aspect of corruption in the societal model. While respondents perceive a higher level of quasi-marketization, societal corruption is lower. These findings suggest that while the North Korean government exerts control by propagating an ideology that the society is not corrupt, there is a discrepancy with the actual situation in the market.
